BAT Plant develops a standardized solution for flexible control and monitoring

\"BATBritish American Tobacco is one of the world\\\'s largest tobacco processors, with cigarette brands sold in 180 markets around the world. The company produces high quality tobacco products to meet the diverse preferences of millions of consumers from seed to smoke

IET has played an important role in this success by providing automation solutions to British American Tobacco Kenya Ltd. The first project IET undertook for BAT consisted of three Motor Control Centers (MCC)

  • The dusting unit
  • The blending line
  • The first stage

One central S7-400 PLC was connected to three operator panels (model OP 27) via a Process Field Bus (PROFIBUS) network. Three ET-200M Extended Terminal stations were used for effective communication between the three MCCs. The whole system encompassed about 900 inputs and outputs.

Maintenance personnel, quality technicians, data entry staff and others who move from area to area within the plant can now view the plant processes, enter information, and change set points of different processes from a single operator panel.

The BAT Thika plant is viewed as a trendsetter with regard to future-oriented production technologies, especially in the automation area.
